If you have trouble remembering people's names or their relationships to others in your circle of friend's or family, try this trick:

Whenever you get an invitation or announcement, add people to your address book. Whether it's the old-fashioned kind or an electronic one, you can add people's information and make a note as to their connection to others. For instance, "Goes by Bill, is Grandma's sister's son."

I'm so-so excited about this design! This super lovely bride contacted me wanting an illustration of her and her hubby-to-be in their wedding attire along with their precious pup! She sent me an image of herself at one of her dress fittings (by the way she was glowing!!)so that I knew what her dress looked like. She also sent images of her fiance & what he is going to wear as well! I just love, love, love the way the image came out! Wouldn't you just die if you received something SO cute in the mail?!??!

Ashley Brooke Designs: Walking The Dog

We've been having some extraordinarily beautiful weather lately. After a cold winter by Florida standards, everyone is excited to be out and about (I totally stay inside due to the allergies but that's neither here nor there...).

Since everyone is so eager to be out in this nice weather I thought today we'd review a couple of tips for walking your dog outside.

Obviously, everyone knows to clean up after their dog uses the bathroom. But some other points to remember: Always have your dog on a leash. As convenient as retractable leashes may be, consider that with their super thin lines, retractable leashes can appear almost invisible to oncoming joggers and cyclists. Also keep your leash to 6 feet or under so that your dog can't get too far!

P.S. The bottom left photo is a forth generation (all starting with my Great Grandma Ann in the blue) picture we snapped right before brunch at my parents house on Easter Sunday!

** Note to self, never put a Nerf Gun in your husbands Easter basket, he will torture you and your furry little dog too with little foam darts all day long!!

Ashley Brooke Designs: National Letter Writing and Card Month

Now that we are well into April, it's high time to acknowledge that it is National Letter Writing and Card Month! You know how we love a celebration around Ashley Brooke Designs :)

While we are emailing and twittering fiends around here. You can't run a stationery company unless you have a deep, deep love for paper and the art of a handwritten note. Years from now, your inbox will be empty but letters you've written and received will live on. That's the great thing about letters and notes. Not only are the infinitely more personal than other forms of communication but you can keep them forever and they serve as a sort of compact history of events.

So I encourage you to put pen to paper this month and send someone a real, honest to goodness letter. I guarantee they'll love it and cherish it for years to come. And if you need some paper, you know who to call...;)

Hi there!

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter. The Mr. and I thoroughly enjoyed our first Easter as a married couple and had a great time going to church and having brunch with both of our families.

I thought I'd share a quick story this morning concerning customer service. Business owners big and small are constantly presented with opportunities to take negative experiences and turn them into positive ones. Sometimes they pass the test with flying colors and other times they fail miserably.

I experienced one of these failures this weekend. My sweet mom wanted to put a gift certificate for 3 haircuts in the Mr.'s Easter basket, so she asked me to run by his usual place and pick them up. I arrived right as the ladies were closing down for the day, but all I wanted was a gift certificate. I knock on the door and the lady shakes her head at me! I shake my head and keep knocking.

She answers the door to tell me they're closed and that she can't help me. I explain that I know they are closed/closing and I apologize for being there so late but tell her this is for an Easter basket and I just need the gift card, etc. She says the register and computer are shut down. I offer to let her write down my credit card number, essentially saying, "hey! here's some money!" and she is completely uninterested. She proceeds to shut the door in my face.

Now listen. I realize that is was late and their equipment is shut down. But she had a prime opportunity to turn a negative experience into a positive one. They could have simply taken my information and given me a gift card or even a business card and said, "We can't activate the card today but put this in the basket and come in on Monday and we'll get you a gift card." Any number of things would have been better than a door in the face. As a result, I'll be advising the Mr. to get his haircuts elsewhere...

This is why I love my clients!!

The lovely Penny contacted me a few weeks back needing something extra special for her daughter and son-in-law who are expecting their first child! Penny desperately wanted to throw them a shower but wasn't able to since they live in Colorado! So she came to me with the "Shower in a box" idea, which I think is SO brilliant! Penny is asking all of the "guests" to mail or bring gifts to her home for the parents-to-be and she is going to put all of the gifts in a box to ship to Colorado! How fun would it be to open up a huge box with tons of pink wrapped gifts over flowing out of it!

I hope you enjoy your shower in the box Luke and Destiny!!

Today I thought I'd share a favorite blurb from Emily Post's Etiquette with tips for stress-free gift giving.

-Ask recipients for hints or a wish-list. Be on the lookout for items throughout the year.

-Trust your own judgment. Don't be afraid that the gift isn't perfect, if you think they'll like it, they probably will.

-Stay on budget. If you spend outside your budget, the fun of gifting will be overshadowed by the stress of extending your budget.

-Have nice, thoughtful gifts stashed away in a gift closet for when the gifting occasion presents itself.

So sorry, our etiquette post was absent yesterday, blogger was being a pill and we never got back to it. But today I thought we'd talk about dancing, since I spent a good bit of the weekend dancing at all the various wedding activities.

Here are some points of etiquette on the dance floor:

Don't come to the party or dance floor wearing too much cologne.

If the dance floor is packed, keep your steps and your arms contained

If you bump into somebody, apologize and say "So sorry"

Don't correct your dance partner

I LOVE doing dog portraits! They are seriously so much fun! I jumped at the chance when a client e-mailed me to inquire about a dog portrait for her mother to give to her on Mother's Day (how sweet is that?)! Anyways, I was beyond thrilled to start on this project for her! I am so-so excited for her mother to receive this super special portrait on her day!

Also, I always have the clients pick out the background color for the dog portraits and she picked teal! This is an extra special color for her mother since she is fighting ovarian cancer, hopefully this portrait will be not only something fun for her but also an inspiration to fight!!

Ashley Brooke Designs: Drive-Thru Windows

Good Morning! It is POURING this morning, hopefully it will clear out later today or we'll start floating away :)

This past weekend one of my very best friends got married and she and her groom looked amazing and the evening was just perfect. Maybe I'll share a few photos later this week ;)

On rainy, yucky days like today I'm super thankful for drive-thrus. Sometimes I wish every place had one so I could zip up in my car and not have to get out and go inside. But even at a drive-thru window, there are things to keep in mind regarding etiquette.

Remember to be patient. Although this is a convenience, service is not instantaneous. Don't crowd a car in front of you or honk. Always speak clearly into the intercom if there is one. Have items like prescription slips or money, deposits, etc. ready to go. And lastly, if you take something away from the drive-thru, check your receipt, bag, etc, before you pull away.

Just like everyone else, drive-thru attendants appreciate a please, thank you and a smile too!

Ashley Brooke Designs: Breast Cancer Foundation

A few weeks back we were contacted by a foundation that supports the Breast Cancer research called Breast Friends. They were having a charity event luncheon and asked if we would like to be involved! I jumped at the request, "of course we do!"! One of my very favorite clients headed up the event in Indialantic, FL and as soon as she saw our Valentines that give she thought we might be able to create something just as fantastic for breast cancer. And that we did!

We had a booth right outside of the gorgeous ball room. We sold lots of fabulous things including debuting our YOU ARE FABULOUS postcards! Everyone had a blast and the Ashely Brooke Designs table was a H-I-T!! Most likely because we are all ex-cheerleaders and can get energy in a crowd like no ones business!!

But, I couldn't of done this with out the help of my husband who package stationery for 2 days, my sister, Kyla, who came to help and just happened to provide her DE-licious homemade vanilla bean cupcakes, and Betsy, who sold her little heart out!! You all were life savers & I'm lucky to have you!!

Thank you again for everyone who came and stopped by our booth! We enjoyed chatting with each of you! You are all so much fun and we are honored to say we were apart of such a wonderful event!

Everyone is put on the spot at some point or another. Here is what Ms. Emily Post herself says about invitations over the phone:

If you are extending an invitation by phone be direct. Something like "Hi Suzie, we are having a few people over Friday night for a game night, can you and Steve make it?"

Suzie can either accept or say "I'm sorry, sounds fun, but we already have plans Friday night."

"I'll let you know," by itself is not an appropriate response. This makes it sound like you are waiting for a better invitation to come along. The only time it's acceptable is if it is followed up with an explanation like, "I'll let you know after I check with Steve to be sure he is free Friday night," or "We have tickets for a play Friday night, I'll let you know if I can exchange them for another night."

The Oh-So-Lovely Elisabeth Rohm contacted me a few weeks back with a VERY special project! Her sweet little girl Easton is turning two and was in dire need of the perfect invitation! We chatted on the phone for a bit and once we hung up, I went right to work!

While we were chatting Elisabeth told me that the party was going to be super fun with balloons, music teachers, animals, etc. but they also wanted their "grown up friends" to have a blast as well! I think the invitation reflects all of that and more!! I am SO in love with the finished look!!

Ashley Brooke Designs: Cell Phone Etiquette

Goodness knows I would be LOST without my trusty iPhone but there are certain cell phone courtesies everyone should be aware of and definitely some "Never-ever, can't ever happen" things too! Here are four Don't s, no matter what.

Leaving your ringer on in quiet places: Whether you're at the movies, church or a performance venue like a concert hall or theater, nothing is more disruptive than having your cell phone ringing loudly for everyone to hear. Don't be that person. Vibrate is far less disturbing if you need to be aware of in coming calls, your fellow patrons will thank you!

Ignoring Present Company: If you are with friends and family, nothing says "I'd rather be somewhere else," than endlessly checking your cell phone and/or having conversations on it.

Making Repeated Calls in Public Places: If you're in an airport, on the subway or in a bank making call after call can easily annoy everyone around you. If you are making calls simply to pass the time, think about bringing a book or magazine to read.

Using Offensive Language: This one is a no-brainer. Foul language in public is absolutely NEVER OK.

Ashley Brooke Designs: Voicemail Messages

Here are some things to remember when leaving a message for someone or when someone leaves you a message:

Leaving voice mail:

Always state your name and number first thing. This will alleviate your name and number from getting cut off when you've exceeded the allotted time for the message. Keep your message brief. People don't like long messages and you should save the majority of your conversation for when you do get in touch with the person you're trying to reach. Particularly if you are leaving a message of complaint. Keeping it brief will prevent you from feeling like you can say whatever you feel, instead of constructively offering criticism and looking for a solution.

Returning calls:

A good rule of thumb for returning messages is to do it within 24 hours, unless you are out of town or there are other extenuating circumstances. If you are forced to leave a message, tell the person when exactly you'll be available to chat. Hopefully this will help you to avoid playing phone tag.

Ashley Brooke Designs: Respecting Other's Time

When I sit down to write these etiquette posts, I often consult my giant Etiquette volume which I love! Sometimes I am spurred on by client or reader questions and other times, there is divine inspiration or downright annoyance in my own life or that of a friend, that prompts a topic. Today may just be a combination of the latter two. Etiquette is really the act of responding to specific situations in gracious ways and many times it is much more subtle than figuring out which side of the plate the shrimp fork goes on or how to address an invitation to a recently divorced woman (although both can be important and should be understood).

Respect is the cornerstone of etiquette and nothing is less gracious than having no respect for someone's time. We see this happen all the time and even I don't always take offense or notice it right away. But anytime we are late, reschedule at the last minute or make someone wait unnecessarily for information, we are saying "We don't think your time is as important as ours," or " I don't respect your schedule or what you have going on." Money and time are in high demand and short supply. For most people, time is money and it is precious. So next time someone disrespects your time or you wait until the last minute and it affects someone else, think about how valuable time is to them and to you and make a point to be gracious and respectful.

Ashley Brooke Designs: From "Mom To Be" to "Mom And Baby"

Let's face it, when you are getting ready to have a baby you are not only nesting and putting together the nursery and researching car seats, you are also writing a ZILLION thank you notes! Everyone loves a baby, and nothing beats buying itsy-bitsy shoes and sweet cuddly pajamas! Even your neighbor down the street will bring you something she "just couldn't pass up!" So the fact of the matter is, you will be writing A LOT of thank you notes and if this is in fact the case, you might as well write them in style!

I have been doing these "Pre & Post Baby" sets lately where I will draw the mom-to-be with the baby bump and without! I think this is such a great idea and helps your thank you notes transition as smoothly as you will into motherhood!

Let's face it. We've all had times on the road where our own road rage rears its ugly head. Sometimes other drivers can be so incredibly frustrating and they can really push your buttons. As irritated as you can get, some people can take road rage to a criminal level. Here are some things you should never do in order to avoid getting into a dangerous situation.

Never tailgate another driver, particularly if either party is driving fast
Don't make eye contact with an aggressive driver
Never make obscene gestures
Don't lay on the horn without letting up
Do not block the passing lane

Ashley Brooke Designs: How a Thank You Note Can Build a Brand

Good Morning!! I have to admit, although they're crazy, I kind of like Mondays. It's my catch-up/get organized day most of the time. Returning emails, working on invoices, and always a little designing!

I wanted to share a story with you that really reinforces for me just how important a hand written thank you note can be. Not only personally but professionally.

I recently sent my friend EHK to get the new OPI gel manicure as a thank you to her. She had a great time and her nails look FANTASTIC! Seriously, I need to get one of these, like today. But anyway, about two days later she got something in the mail: A hand-written, thank you note from the nail technician! Karen (the nail tech) thanked EHK for letting her take care of hands and assured her that she would always be there to answer any questions, etc. It was a super nice note and an important professional gesture as well.

See even if EHK was unsure about whether or not she would go back to Karen, you can bet your bottom dollar that such a thoughtful, sweet note sealed the deal! I'm sure Karen thanked her when she left the salon, but by going to extra mile, she made EHK feel special and truly appreciated as a client. And that is what thank you notes are all about: conveying just how much you care and appreciate the recipient. A lesson we should all take to heart.

Ashley Brooke Designs: A Personal Project

(This pretty piece is hanging directly across from our bed. I love waking up and seeing it every morning!)

Every once in a while I need to do something creative, something that isn't at all similar to what I do all day everyday. Something that gives me fresh perspective on design. I absolutely love what I do and want to do it for the next 80 years of my life, but sometimes I will look at my sketch book and have a complete loss for inspiration... this doesn't happen often but when it does I know I need to take a step back and head to the nearest art supply store! This is my latest piece of what I call Lack-of-inspiration-inspiration-piece, and I'll tell you what it worked like a charm as soon as I finished this design I was filled with new ideas for my clients!

Inevitably, you will enter into conversation with someone who is nosy and has no qualms about asking the most inappropriate questions. Before I was engaged/married I was constantly asked "When are you getting married?" or "Why aren't you engaged yet?" It was such an odd question! So here are some responses per Miss Emily Post herself, that can stop nosy conversationalists in their tracks.

When are you going to have children?

-"Who Knows?"

-"That's a pretty big decision, I'd rather not talk about right now"

How old are you?

-"34 and holding"

-"Old enough to know better"

Have you been sick?

-"Actually I feel great"

-"Why do you ask, do I look tired?"

How much did you pay for that?

-"Only what it's worth"

-"Wouldn't you like to know!"

Here are a few stock answers that will work for a variety of nosy questions:

" Why do you ask", "What does that have to do with anything?", "Sorry, I just prefer not to discuss such things"

Ashley Brooke Designs: Saying No in Conversation

Saying no. I think everyone can relate to the challenges of turning down an offer, invitation or opportunity. But it's never as easy as it seems is it? Sometimes saying no take real fortitude and I know for me, it's something I continue to have to work on.

Part of etiquette and manners is honesty, so if you really want to say no, no is the answer you should give. But there are some ways to use the word no, in a positive way.

Try accompanying it with a positive comment, like, "No, but thanks for asking me" or "No, but I appreciate you thinking of me." Don't hem and haw, saying things like, "Well I really shouldn't," when you mean no, because this leaves the door open to further discussion. If there is an opportunity that you aren't wanting to do now, but may be open to later, make that known. But don't throw out a "But do call me next year," if you aren't really up for it.

Ashley Brooke Designs: What a Good Conversationalist Knows

Know when to stop talking: People who talk too much can also be the ones who speak without thinking. And we all know that this can lead to embarrassing moments.

Keep up with world events: Reading a newspaper or magazine will help you come up with subject matter to discuss with others and you'll be able to relate to other people's discussions.

Avoid Repetitions: Stories told multiple times can be boring. If you aren't sure about whether or not you've told the story before, ask "Did I tell you about Lucy's latest escapade?"

Don't Whisper: Whispering or talking low to one person, can denote something being kept in secret.

Ashley Brooke Designs: A Bridal Shower + A Baby Shower (in the same weekend!)

This weekend was full of lovely ladies, great food, and TONS of cupcakes! That is right I hosted a Bridal shower at our house on Saturday and I co-hosted a Baby shower at my Parents house on Sunday with my sister and mom! There is nothing more fun than putting on a shower for your close friends to celebrate life's biggest moments!

I was thrilled to be apart of both showers and both Deanna (the bride) and Shavaun (the mom-to-be) were blushing with excitement!

Also, I was able to make both shower invites which is always so much fun! I kept both invites similar and changed out colors, pram, and wedding dress! I thought since they were in the same weekend it might be fun to do *almost* matching invites!

(Pink and yellow are Deanna's wedding colors so the shower kept that theme! Deanna is one of my dearest friends and I was honored to do something so special for her!)
-My sister made the delicious cupcakes and I prepared the rest!
- The gift was, a grocery list note pad with her new name, personalized recipe cards, and coordinating thank you cards!
** Oh and don't mind the photo where I am totally looking at the WRONG camera! Oops!

I love you Dee!! I Can't wait to stand by your side on your BIG day!

(Sweet baby Anna is due in just TWO weeks and I know that I speak for the entire family when I say, we couldn't be more excited!!)
Shavaun is my cousin's wife but friend first! Shavuan is like a sister to me so throwing this shower for her was EXTRA special! We all know that Shavun will make a fantastic mother!

- Once again my sister made the delicious cupcakes! And my fabulous mother prepared all of the goodies!
-The gift was THE cutest tutu bathing suit, a mommy-to-be notepad that 10 sheets in turns into a mommy-to-do list, and of course matching thank you cards.

I love you Shavaun and I can't WAIT to meet sweet little Anna!!

Ashley Brooke Designs: The Etiquette of Conversation

Good Morning! It's the day after Oscar and I am still catching up on all the gorgeous gowns, since I was driving last night during all the festivities. Ever thought about all the small talk conversation your favorites stars must have to make at award shows??

This week I thought we could look at good old fashioned conversation. Are you ever at a loss as to what to say? Or shocked by some of the inappropriate things people say to you? I've been on both ends of the spectrum multiple times. Let's start this Monday with the basics, shall we?

The two most important aspects of conversation are probably thinking and listening. Being thoughtful about your audience will influence what you say to them, and if you should say anything at all really. Should you council a friend on bridesmaids gifts when she isn't in your bridal party? Probably not. Listening is also crucial. Lots of times we are thinking so carefully about what we want to say in response that we are not even listening to the other person.

Interruptions are rude. The only time it's remotely OK is when you have something that honestly can't wait. But otherwise, avoid interrupting someone just to throw in your two cents.

Be sure and leave people with a comfortable amount of personal space. The standard is to be no closer than eighteen inches apart. Be conscious of height as well so that no one has to look up or down at you.

Final Thoughts on Tipping

Sometimes when you have poor service you may want to tip less. While it can certainly be understood that you may feel dissatisfied and want an outlet to express your displeasure, here's a couple of things to consider.

If there is a problem, bring it to the attention of your waiter and know whether or not it's a problem they can solve. If it is beyond their control, bring in the manager. If your problem is resolved you should tip the full amount.

If your waiter produces so-so results and doesn't deserve all the blame, you can reduce the tip to 10%.

If your server was down right nasty, 8% is considered to be the fairest expression of your dissatisfaction. In some cases restaurants report up to 8% of their take as waitstaff income, so tipping less than this could cost the waiter/waitress.

After posting about tipping yesterday I received a great question from a reader:

What should you do when you're dining with a larger party and the restaurant adds tip to the total bill rather than the pre-tax amount? (Especially if you're with people you're trying to impress.)

It's not so much the money, it's the principle.

As we've seen in other facets of society just because something is considered appropriate etiquette doesn't necessarily mean everyone follows the rules. If a restaurant adds an automatic gratuity based on party size or simply has made this part of it's restaurant culture, there isn't really a protocol for handling whether or not they tip on the pre-tax amount. Regretfully, we have to play by their rules, assuming that they have denoted the amount of gratuity added either on the menu or your receipt.

Ashley Brooke Designs: The Finer Points of Tipping

To piggyback off of yesterday's helpful hints regarding invitation mailing, I thought we could cover some of the finer points of tipping. Most of us are familiar with the customary 15-20% tip for a server at a restaurant but there are countless other experiences where how much and what to tip can come up.

Here are a few general guidelines:

-If you are in doubt about tipping, don't be afraid to ask. If you are getting a sofa delivered, call the store and ask if tipping is customary. At a hair salon, ask the receptionist. Asking is helpful because there are certain organizations and situations where tipping could be discouraged or even seen as demeaning.

-Tip on the pre-tax amount. Not the total bill

-Be discreet in your tipping. Flashing bills and making a big show is definitely in poor taste.

-Money is the tip of choice in most cases but around the holidays for example, a tip can be substituted with a small gift.

Good Morning! I can't believe it's already the first day of March!! 2010 is flying by. This morning and Wednesday I will be posting on the It's Better Together blog. It's Better Together is a group of creative professionals and entrepreneurs that meets periodically in the central Florida area. And now for the last piece of the shower etiquette puzzle: saying thank you! Even if you thank your guests at the shower, it's always best to follow up with a written thank you note. If you are the guest of honor, it is thoughtful to bring a thank you note and small gift to your host or hostess on the day of, for throwing you the shower.

Ashley Brooke Designs: Bridal Showers

The bridal shower started in ancient times when the community would "shower" newlyweds with grains of wheat or sweet cakes to symbolize wishes for fertility and prosperity.

Showers should be an intimate gathering of friends and family designed to celebrate the upcoming wedding. Showers can be held any time of day and can have various themes that dictate the types of gifts the bride receives.

Showers are usually hosted by close friends of the bride, the groom or their parents. Professional colleagues have been known to throw "work showers" and some events know include both the bride and the groom. In the case of friends of mine who were married last May, the groom was thrown his own "tool shower" by his best buddies.

The host or hostess issues the invitations with a guest list of the brides choosing. Out of courtesy for your host or hostess, brides should provide a complete list with all the necessary information to address and send the invitations.

During the shower, opening gifts is certainly a highlight. Be sure and have someone record who gave what gift so that the bride can refer to this list when writing thank you notes.

How much do you love this design?! Well, I can tell you right now that I L.O.V.E. this! Carrie's sweet friend Shelby ordered these custom designed note cards for her as a "thanks for being you" gift! Who wants to be Shelby's friend... I know I do!!! Anyways, after discussing want she had in mind we came up with something cohesive to illustrate her love for cooking, fashion, wine, Tuscany, and her sweet dog. I can't get enough of this design and I hope Carrie loves it as much as Shelby and I do!

Ashley Brooke Design: Unconvential Showers

Encore Showers

Emily Post says it is perfectly fine to throw a shower for the second or even third baby when the guest list is kept to close relatives and very close friends and guests who did not attend the first shower. If the family has moved, it makes sense for their new friends to throw them a shower regardless of how many children they have.

If the parents are well stocked with their baby supply needs, it could be fun to throw a themed shower like "stock the cabinets" or "fun for Mom & Dad" where guests bring things for the parents to enjoy like babysitting coupons or their favorite DVDs, maybe tickets to a movie or play.

Ashley Brooke Designs: Celebrations

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We certainly did and last night (as we, at Ashley Brooke Designs are known to do) got a jump start on this week, which feels really good!

Not this weekend, but the next, I have both a bridal shower, which I am giving one of my dearest friends and a baby shower, which I'm giving with my mom and sister for a super close friend and family member! Since I am preparing for both showers, I thought we could discuss the etiquette associated with certain lovely life celebrations.

Let's start with the Baby Shower! Showers can be given four to six weeks before the birth and even up to four weeks after the birth. Waiting a little longer after the baby is born lends itself to the "Sip n See," where family and friends come to see both mother and baby. Invitations should be sent out two-three weeks prior to the shower.

The invitation should include the mother's (or both parent's) name(s). the shower date and time and a request to RSVP. You can include gift registry information and the name or initials of the baby, if it has already been decided. Some people love having this information so they can give a more personalized gift (I'm looking at you Miss Monogram!)

Ashley Brooke Designs: Shopping Stops Etiquette

We all know that different places have different "rules" that apply. I thought here at Ashley's Daily Dose of Etiquette we would look at a couple of key points for various places you may find yourself.

In a department store: If you can't find a salesperson, approach the nearest register and ask where you can find an associate to help. If an associate is hovering it is perfectly fine to say "Thanks for your help but I'd like to look on my own and I'll come find you when I'm ready to check out."

At a pharmacy: Call in your Rx unless you are prepared to wait. If there are unexpected changes in your insurance, cost of prescription, etc. don't take it out on your pharmacist.

At the salon: Be on time since your tardiness could mess up the schedule for the rest of the day. Also be honest but kind if you decide to switch stylists. You should never just disappear. Maybe something like "I just feel like I'm in a rut and I'd love to try one of Daisy's crazy haircuts to spice things up!" Likewise if you aren't happy with a cut or color, speak up as soon as possible so it can be corrected the next day.

At yard sales: Honor any request for no early birds and carry small bills. Also, leave display as you found them, not in disarray!

The Grocery Store

The grocery store may be one of the places you frequent most often, so it's important to have the best of manners while you are there:

Do follow express lane rules! (By far the biggest manners infraction at your local grocery).
Do let those in front of you take the spot in a newly opened lane.
Do put an item back in its proper place if you decided you don't want it. Don't stash it just anywhere.
Do bag your own items if there isn't an employee bagging at your checkout, this will get your out the door faster and allow the cashier to move immediately to the next guest in line.
Do make your items accessible to the cashier.

Shopping Smart

Here are additional manners-minded tips for a pleasant shopping experience:

1. As your purchases are being rung up at the register, get your wallet, checkbook, etc. out and ready to go. It can be frustrating for those waiting in line behind you if you wait until your total is announced and than waste precious time searching for your form of payment.

2. Keep children under control. If you know your child has a hard time behaving while you are shopping, make arrangements for a babysitter or time with the grandparents! If you are shopping with you child, try to avoid times when they are hungry or tired, your kids and fellow shoppers will thank you!

3. Keep cell phone use to a minimum and avoid adding to the noise around you. If you must be on your phone, kindly end your conversation before you get to the register. Talking on the phone while being checked out tells the person at the cash desk that they are invisible to you.

First of all, sales people are there to help you and it's important to remember what is in their control and what isn't. Treat them with respect and be kind, using please and thank you. Sales people who are treated kindly and respectfully, will almost always treat you the same way. And at your favorite stores, a sale person can be your greatest asset in notifying you of sales or new merchandise!

Do not hold salespeople accountable for things outside of their control. If the dress you want is out of stock, or you can't get a refund you think you deserve, ask to speak with a manger who will likely be able to best help you with your problem. Likewise if you aren't being treated with respect by a salesperson or they aren't helping you with something that is in their field of expertise, feel free to mention this a manager.

Reacting in Situations

When Shopping:

You are waiting in a slow line. When another line opens up, the people behind you rush to get there first.

Unless the cashier motioned to the people in line behind you, you can politely say "I'm sorry, but I was waiting in line before you, would you mind if I go first?" If they say yes, great. If not, you should probably drop it, because you are clearly dealing with people are not going to be sensitive to the needs of other.

At Work:

One of your coworkers regularly talks badly about a workmate she doesn't like with a group in the office lunchroom.

If you are merely eavesdropping, you don't have any grounds to comment. If you genuinely couldn't help but overhear, you can suggest "Tracy, I don't mean to overstep but if you are going to speak ill of Brenda, don't you think you should do it somewhere more private? She could easily walk in on you in here." If what she is saying is blatantly false, you can also point this out to her.

Out and About:

As you walk down the street, you see a man and his son throw empty paper cups to the ground. There is a trash bin no less than 10 feet away.

Don't make a fuss and glare at the litterers, merely lead by example. Pick up the cups and deposit them in the trash.

Responding to Rudeness

Sometimes when someone is rude to you, it can happen so quickly, you don't even know how to respond. Other times you may choose to walk away in order to avoid a confrontation. Whatever you do, there are some helpful things to think about as you contemplate your response.

Don't take it personally. Sometimes the rude behavior is due to that person being a bad mood or having a rough day. Give them the benefit of the doubt and consider what they could be going through to trigger that behavior.

Size up your troubles. Is it best to just let it go? Sometimes addressing a conflict can be a waste of your time and energy.

Take responsibility for your own actions. Examine whether or not you did something to provoke such behavior.

Mental exercise. Count to ten or focus on yourself or something else before you erupt in anger.

Battling Rudeness

No matter how gracious your own behavior, you are bound to encounter other people who behave rudely. And sometimes no matter our best intentions, we can unknowingly commit rude behavior as well. So this week we are taking a look a rudeness and how to handle it with grace.

For starters, lets look a few different ways rudeness presents itself:

Aggressive Rudeness: Intentional, no holding back, rudeness. This is someone yelling at you after you bump into them or someone slowly down as they drive because they feel you cut them off or are tailgating.

Casual Rudeness: These are the behaviors that are often unconscious or unintentional but annoying none the less. Chatting loudly on your cell phone or rushing to a new line being opened after being a very end of a long one.

Rudeness in Disguise: This is the rudeness I always categorize as a "dig" or a backhanded compliment. Here's an example: " I love that sweater, it makes you look so much thinner than you usually do."

Bottom of the Barrel of Behavior: These are things one should NEVER do. Blowing your nose at the table, burping loudly, cursing in public.

Graduation is just around the corner, believe it or not, and the orders are roll'n in for graduation announcements, and thank yous! This is one of my favorites! Super sweet Kelsey e-mailed me a few weeks back and attached her A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E Senior photo where she was wearing this exact outfit and I couldn't stop myself I had to draw it!! Email Additions

A lot of email programs and providers have extra email add-ons. Signatures and attachments can get tricky, here's the scoop!

Signatures:

Many programs have a way to include an automatic signature that includes your name, company, address, email, phone number...any amount of additional contact info you might like to include. This is a good idea in case someone wants to get in touch with you in another way. If you can't set one up to post automatically, think about manually adding this to emails.

Attachments:

If you send an email with an attachment, be sure its an attachment they can open. You would hate to send over important information that can't be opened. Likewise, if you receive an attachment, only open it if you know the sender. Sometimes viruses can be stored in attachments.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for a question from a reader! This stems from last weeks post on beverage etiquette:

Hey, I was just reading your post about tea and coffee and was wondering, when you are served a drink in a bar and they put the stir stick in. What should you do with that? I use it to stir and then dispose of it as soon as I can. Some people drink from it ;(. What is proper? Just curious!

Well, according to Emily Post's Etiquette, this is the proper way to handle straws and stir sticks placed in cocktails:

"When drinking a cocktail the only non edible item you should leave in your glass is a straw; swizzle sticks and paper umbrella go onto the table or your bread plate. At parties hold such accoutrements in a napkin until you find a waste receptacle. "

The Six Traits of Excellent E-Mailers

1. Address Carefully: If you are sending an email to several people, avoid putting all their addresses in the To and CC boxes. Send the email individually or use the BCC or blind copy option. This way everyone's name and email address doesn't have be to seen by everyone.

2. Subject Matters: Always fill in the subject line even in a personal email, this gives your reader a heads up as to what your message says and whether or not its urgent or can be answered later.

3. Short & Sweet: Emails should be kept brief. It should be one of the perks of communicating in this convenient way.

4. Speak softly: Capital letters can denote shouting in an e-mail and are much harder to read. Avoid at all costs.

5. Symbology: Be careful of using too many symbols, emoticons :), or web abbreviations (LOL). These can confuse readers and leave messages open to interpretation where you don't want any.

6. The Proof is in the Pudding: Check and double check all emails before sending. This can save you a lot of embarrassment by making sure you are saying exactly what you want to say and sending it to the right person!

You've Got Mail

Happy Monday! Don't you love the start of a new week? Everyday I (thankfully) wake up to lots and lots of Ashley Brooke Designs emails. And sometimes, as integrated into our lives as email is, we all need to be reminded of special etiquette tips concerning this form of communications.

Human Contact Still Matters: Sometimes e-mail just won't cut it. Don't use email as a way to avoid personal interaction. Asking your boss for a raise or breaking up with a boyfriend, still requires face to face time.

Watch What You Say and How You Say It: Remain courteous no matter what. Sometimes e-mail can feel anonymous and you may be compelled to say things you would not otherwise communicate. Treat an e-mail like any other form of communication and make sure you are conveying exactly what it is you want to say in the most respectful way.

Be Careful When Clicking Send: Once you click send there is no going back. So be absolutely certain that you are OK with what you are sending and that you are in fact, sending it to the right person!

Feeling Blessed Today & It's Better Together Recap

I love my job.

It's funny because this week has been a very intense week for us here at Ashley Brooke Designs in all sorts good & irritating ways. I feel like this week has nurtured growth for me and us in ways I didn't see coming. But in the midst of pure frustration there wasn't a moment that I thought to my self I wish I wasn't doing this (maybe I wish I had 4 arms instead of 2, but that is besides the point). I love what I do. I truly adore it. This little business is my baby and I eat, breath, sleep it.

It is an incredible feeling to know that you've created something with a few markers and a sketch book. Something that has been able to help impact peoples lives, something worth taking a second glance at. Something that makes you smile, and something that is purely indulgent!

Even on the days where my markers have run out of ink, the printer is printing only the color yellow, I've drank too much coffee and I can't steady my hand enough to draw a maltipoo, my e-mail server has crashed, I think to myself... it literally doesn't get any better than this. I love what I do. Even on the no-good-very-bad-days, I get the chance to create something from scratch and there is nothing like having an idea and making it come forth on paper. So I guess what I am trying to say is thank you! Thank you for supporting my dream of a creating stationery company, thank you. For you, I will be forever grateful!

Also, I wanted to attach a few photos from last nights meet-up with It's Better Together! We had such a great time at Lure Design Studio and I personally learned a ton from the wonderful people there! They even let us screen print our own poster (SO FUN!!). And not to mention the people who attended are some of the most hard working, talented people I know, I feel so blessed and honored to be in there company!

I was given the responsibility to come up with the name tags and business card holders for this meet up and I just love the way the finished product came out! Everything is always better together!

Assorted Table Tips

I hope this week's topic has reminded you of some of those forgotten table manners and tips. To finish up I've pulled some "assorted table tips" from Emily Post's Etiquette. Enjoy!

--Remember to make good use of that napkin in your lap! Wiping your fingers as necessary and blotting your lips every so often

--If you can't seem to get a certain piece of food on your fork do NOT use your fingers to push it on to the tines. Use a piece of bread or your knife as the pusher.

--If you use bread to sop up gravy or sauce, make the sure the bread is on the end of your fork and use your fork to eat the soaked bread--not your hands/fingers!

--When you are finished eating, do not push your plate away from you. Also avoid saying things like "I'm stuffed" or "I'm done."

Coffee, Tea or Me?

Table manners extend to beverages too and today when so many meetings and social interactions take place over coffee and tea, I thought it might be good to look at specific etiquette tips associated with these yummy treats.

Four Don'ts:

1. Your spoon should rest on the saucer or plate, do not leave it in the cup or mug

2. Don't take ice from your water to cool a hot drink

3. Don't dunk doughnuts, biscotti or anything else in your coffee, unless you are in a SUPER casual environment where that is the norm

4. Don't crook your pinkie when drinking from your teacup, this went out of fashion in the Victorian age.

What Do I Do When...

We've all been out to dinner and wondered whether it was appropriate to pick up a dropped fork or what to tell the waiter when he tried to take your unfinished plate of food. Enjoy this advice from Emily Post on what to do in these sticky situations!

"What Do I Do When..."

I've dropped something? Don't pick up dropped utensil unless its impeding traffic or causing a problem. Likewise your napkin can stay on the floor. Just kindly ask your waiter to replace what has been dropped.

I have spinach in my teeth? Running your tongue over your teeth or being notified by discreetly by a table mate might bring this to your attention. If you can wipe your teeth with your napkin unnoticed do so, if not excuse yourself.

I knock over my drink? Immediately set the glass upright and apologize to everyone. Do not try and scrounge around on the floor to get ice, etc. Discreetly call the waiter for extra napkins to blot up the mess.

The waiter tries to whisk my plate away? Don't hesitate to say "Oh, I haven't finished," even if he's on his way to the kitchen. If you are done but don't want to rush the rest of the table, you can say "If you don't mind, please wait until everyone's finished before you clear the plates."

Dining and Entertaining

I thought we'd get back to basics this week and take a look at some good old fashioned table manners. Particularly if you have a Valentine's date coming up, it is always nice to make a good impression at the dinner table, whether your out and about or in someone's home. Having good table manners allows everyone to focus on the meal and conversation rather than the distractions of someone's poor table manners. Let's review some examples of a table setting:

If you are ever overwhelmed by your place setting, remember that when it comes to utensils, you always work from the outside in. There is never more than three of any element (unless there's an oyster fork, making 4 forks in a formal setting) and the cutting edge of the knife always faces in toward the plate.

Stationery for Men

Although I design stationery for women and men, people tend to be less informed about the traditions behind men's stationery. Traditionally stationery for men differed both in size and color than women's stationery. A man's standard paper was a monarch sheet measuring 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches. It comes in white, cream or gray, with gray being the most popular color. This paper is used for typed or handwritten notes, and is folded into thirds an slipped into a envelope when done. This paper can include personal information, in a block or roman typeface, but doesn't have to. Men can also use correspondence cards for brief notes.

Two of my very best friends are getting married to each other in March! I couldn't be any more excited for them or more honored to be asked to do their invites! Their wedding colors are lemon yellow and raspberry pink!! Our bridesmaid dresses are the raspberry + we will be holding lemon yellow flowers = super fun and preppy! So I had to come up with a design that suited the fun, flirty, and bright wedding theme!

I absolutely LOVE the end result!

What Etiquette is Not.

I spend a lot of time writing about etiquette and what it involves and encompasses. I search for tips and answer questions as best as I can in order to help people handle situations with grace. As I was thumbing through my Emily Post's Etiquette this morning, I came across an interesting little box on one of the pages..."What Etiquette is Not." I think this is important because it takes the veil off of etiquette and helps people understand that it is accessible for everyone.

What Etiquette is Not:

1. A set of rigid rules: Emily Post has emphasized from the beginning that manners change with the times. Etiquette is a fluid guideline for doing things in ways that make people feel comfortable.

2. Something for the wealthy or well-born: Etiquette is a code of behavior for people of all social and socio-economic standing. Good manners can enhance anyone's life.

3. A thing of the past: While today's more casual approach may lead you to believe the standards of yesterday have disappeared, the cornerstone principles of etiquette are a solid as ever.

4. Snobbishness: Another name for pretentiousness, snobbery violates everything etiquette is about. Etiquette is about being respectful and considerate and snobs are anything but.
